PictureTalk 3.7 Offers New Features for Superior Quality and Ease of Use with its Web-Based Presentation Technology

PLEASANTON, CA, December 5, 2001 – Pixion has released PictureTalk Enterprise Conference Server 3.7, adding significant features to the easy-to-use cross-platform solution for conducting meetings and presentations on the Web.

“Our solution is highly user-friendly and flexible,” said Robert DeKoning, Pixion’s president and CEO. “Especially in this challenging economic time, PictureTalk is the perfect fit for businesses looking to cut traveling costs and increase revenue. We are continually working to improve our solution to meet the needs of the changing business environment and the improved PictureTalk 3.7 confirms that we have listened and responded to our customers needs. ”

PictureTalk is used for one-to-one communication as well as for presentations to thousands of participants. Any application or file on the presenter’s computer desktop can be shown to multiple viewers in an unlimited number of locations. Since its inception in 1995, PictureTalk has worked seamlessly on Windows, Macintosh or Unix platforms.

Pixion’s patent-pending technology conveys imagery over networks in real time, continuously adapting to the performance of individual systems so that participants with slow Internet connections do not limit the speed of the overall presentation.

Among the new features of PictureTalk 3.7 are the following:

  • Application Sharing / Desktop Sharing / Controlled Control‘ gives the presenter the ability to grant control of any application on his or her PC or Macintosh to any attendee. This feature allows two or more persons to collaborate on changes to a document, a spreadsheet or any application open on the desktop. Another use would be for a technician to fix a software problem, install a driver or administer a system from a remote location.
  • Presentation quality/performance optimizer allows the presenter to choose between the quality of the imagery being presented or increased speed in the broadcasting of the presentation. For example, a person conducting a class may be more interested in quickly transferring a chart to dozens of students rather than having absolute color accuracy. However, physicians collaborating on an x-ray may be willing to wait additional seconds to transfer an image showing exact detail.
  • Presenters can use the Meeting Lock Out feature to “lock” a meeting in progress so that no one else can join. A presenter can even eject an unwanted participant and automatically deny access to rejoin a meeting.
  • With Web-based administration there is an improved ease of use for administrators to create user accounts, review audit logs, edit configuration files, etc.
  • There is an improved firewall compatibility with a new HTTP Gateway module.
  • The new PictureTalk Communicator Client now gives moderators the ability to grant application sharing, turn on (or off) an attendee’s mouse pointer, turn on (or off) VoIP audio, or grant an attendee access to present at a meeting. This is most useful in an instructor-lead classroom-like setting.
  • An enhanced chat feature, which includes a configurable list of pre-authored chat messages so most commonly used phrases can be sent without typing, has also been added to PictureTalk Communicator Client.

Additional types of businesses are also expected to adopt Pixion’s technology. International Data Corporation and Forrester Research estimate the worldwide market for audio, video and data conferencing at $7.9 billion by the end of the year. “Our mission is to positively impact business results by improving the way the world communicates,” DeKoning said. “Using PictureTalk is both affordable and effective. The return on investment for our customers, both in terms of saving travel expenses and lost travel time is very significant.”
